David Miller

David S. Miller, Ph.D. is a founder and Executive Managing Director of CEVG. An engineer by training, he brings over 20 years of technology startup management experience and over a dozen years of seed stage investing experience. He is on the board of directors or advisory board of several clean energy companies, including Azima DLI, Next Step Living, MyEnergy, and Cambrian Innovation and has mentored many others. He is also a research affiliate at MIT’s Sloan School of Management.
David is a New England Chapter Director of Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2), a national community of business leaders who advocate for good environmental policy while building economic prosperity (www.e2.org) and has developed relationships with state and federal policy makers to support the growth of the clean energy industry. He is a founding member of the MIT Enterprise Forum’s Energy Special Interest Group and has chaired the mentor program for what is now the Northeast Cleantech Open for over four years. David also co-founded EPrime, which is a forum for clean energy entrepreneurs to network and support each other’s enterprises, was a board member of New England Energy and Environmental Funders, which educated investors interested in energy and environmental companies, and was an advisory board member of the New England Clean Energy Council.
Previously, David founded several companies, including Quantum Telecom Solutions which developed software for programmable switching equipment. He grew the company to profitability, with over 100% annual growth over a four-year period and then negotiated venture financing and sold the company to a division of Lucent Technologies. At Lucent, he served as Director in the New Ventures Group where he managed and evaluated a diverse set of early stage investments.
David was awarded a patent for co-developing a “one number” telecom service, and taught at Rutgers University in the Electrical Engineering Department. He received his BS and MS in Computer Science and Engineering from MIT, and completed his doctorate at MIT’s Lab for Energy and the Environment where he studied the utilization and commercialization of distributed generation and energy efficiency measures. His dissertation examined the impact of a variety of management and investment strategies and public policy initiatives on the success of new clean energy ventures. As a research affiliate at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, he supervises the continuation of this work. David lives in Newton, MA with his wife and two children.

Duarte Mineiro

Duarte Mineiro is Principal at Espirito Santos Ventures and has a BSc in Management and Industrial Engineering from IST (Portugal), and an MBA from Tuck School of Business, at Dartmouth (USA). Duarte has a 10 year experience in Strategic and Management Consulting in The Boston Consulting Group, mainly in the areas of Healthcare and Banking, having worked extensively in Spain, France and in the UK. José Epifânio da Franca

José Franca holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from IST, Technical University of Lisbon (1978), a PhD from Imperial College (1985) and the degree of “Agregado” from UTL (1992). In 1987, he founded IST’s Integrated Circuits and Systems Group and the IST Centre of Microsystems (1994). Co-founded “CHIPIDEA Microelectrónica, S.A”, which he led to be considered one of Europe’s 500 companies and eventually to achieve world leadership in the analog/mixed-signal Semiconductor Intellectual Property industry (Gartner Dataquest). In 2007, Chipidea’s worldwide customer base of about 150 companies included 20 of the top 25 semiconductor companies, notably the top 5. Upon the acquisition of Chipidea by NASDAQ-listed MIPS Technologies Inc. (2007), became a member of the Board of MIPS. José Franca has served in various assignments to the European Commission Scientific and Technology Programs and has been honored with several distinctions and awards for his scientific, academic work and his entrepreneurial activity.

As a manager Jose has experience both in for profit and non profit sectors, having been elected President of MEDIARCOM European Mediation Association. As managing partner of L & V Lucena & Vasconcelos Consultants he worked with clients from a wide variety of industries mainly in strategy, negotiation, conflict management, and whole system change. He has also worked both in commercial and investment banking where I run the REIT's business.
As a civic leader he serves on the Board of the American Club of Lisbon, and on the Board of the MIT Alumni Club of Portugal, and was a founding member of CGOV Portuguese Institute for Corporate Governance.
He has also been active in the area of social marketing and business development as a Mentor to start ups. As an entrepreneur he has started a dozen companies of which three have been successful.
As a lecturer and trainer he carried several subjects in the fields of strategy, marketing, negotiation and conflict resolution for private clients and at the Universities: Nova, Católica, Atlântica and The University of Iowa.
