When President Barack Obama visited OPOWER's HQ in 2010, he called it, "a model of what we want to be seeing all across the country." Alex Laskey is president and founder of the industry-leading smart grid and energy efficiency software company. Using behavioral science, advanced data analytics and clever marketing expertise OPOWER is driving down energy usage across America. Part of its success relies on paper reports comparing energy usage with consumer's neighbours. Since launching in 2008, the approach has cumulatively saved customers for the customers of over 55 utilities clients nearly $35 million (£21.8 million).

Background on what Opower does: Opower is a new customer engagement platform for the utility industry. It helps people use energy more efficiently and ultimately save money on their energy bills and it vastly improves the overall customer experience by making energy use personally relevant. President Obama visited the company, headquarter in Arlington, VA, and praised them for their work making more homes energy efficient and in the process creating jobs for others.

Opower is probably best known for pioneering the Home Energy Report. These reports deliver personalized information about energy usage in a home or small business, and offer easy-to-follow tips that can quickly lead to energy savings. Customized at the household level, the reports likely offer energy-efficiency advice. More than 3 million homes receive their reports today, and they’re on track to save hundreds of millions of dollars on their energy bills.

Jennifer Shine Dyer, MD, MPH, is a pediatric endocrinologist, social media enthusiast (@EndoGoddess), app developer, and mobile health entrepreneur in Ohio with a patient-centered focus looking to make health outcomes better for people living with diabetes or other chronic diseases. In partnership with mobile software startup Duet Health Eproximiti, she has developed the EndoGoddess App available for download since September 2011 for patients with diabetes who require insulin therapy based on BJ Fogg's health behavior model with the following features: iTunes reward motivation, a unique social business plan, daily inspiring quotes submitted from the diabetes online community, multi-media informative diabetes content, social media links. Duet Health has been listed by Rock Health technology accelerator as a health startup to follow and Dr. Dyer's entrepreneurship efforts have been written about extensively both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Dyer also actively engages and speaks nationally about healthcare social media including at the recent South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference in March 2012. She is known to many on twitter as @EndoGoddess and has a youtube channel which she uses primarily for advocacy. Dr. Dyer feels that 'good health is social' and that social media provides opportunities for physicians to connect people with authentic improvements in their wellbeing and health which far outweigh the easily-managed perceived risks.

Additionally, Dr. Dyer is passionate about health policy and translating a balanced, evidence-based approach to its analysis to assure that predicted patient-centered, quality outcomes are indeed realized. She was recently invited to participate in the very first congressional facebook hackathon in the US House of Representatives in December 2011 to brainstorm technical solutions for making congress more transparent and social to its constituents. She also currently participates as a writer for the non-partisan, evidence-based health policy blog 'Policy Prescriptions': http://www.policyprescriptions.org/

Finally, Dr. Dyer is also an experienced nutrition researcher with several original peer-reviewed publications, specifically with regards to the influence of macronutrient food components on metabolism during early fetal development. She is actively involved in local foods advocacy in Columbus, Ohio through partnership with non-profit organization 'Local Matters' and is a member of Slow Foods Columbus. In 2011, she was selected to participate on the Franklin County Local Foods Council.

Dr. Dyer is a board-certified physician in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Endocrinology previously at Nationwide Children's Hospital affiliated with The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio where she recently earned her MPH degree in health behavior studies.
