On initiative of NOVA Medical School | Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (NMS|FCM), NOVA University of Lisbon is granting the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Medical Doctor António de Barros Veloso.

The ceremony will take place on May 10, at 5 pm, at the Rectorate of NOVA. Professor Jaime Branco, Dean of NMS|FCM, will be the patron and Professor António Rendas, former Rector of NOVA, will give the laudation of the awardee.

 

António José de Barros Veloso (Coimbra, Septmber 1930), national leading expert in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology, graduated in 1956 from Coimbra University. In 1978, he was one of the members of the commission nominated by the national Medical Order for the creation of the medical specialty of Internal Medicine in Portugal. Throughout his career, he performed several hospital roles and functions in Civil Hospitals in Lisbon as well as extra-hospital functions.

He also had an active role in several medical societies, among which as the President of the Portuguese Internal Medicine Society (1992-94). Additionally, António de Barros Veloso developed an intense work on medical teaching and training, being the author of several scientific articles.

For his important contribute to the development of Internal Medicine in Portugal, he was awarded in 2017 with the National Prize of Internal Medicine. Among other awards, he was distinguished with two important medals: Medalha de Mérito da Ordem dos Médicos (Merit Medal of the Portuguese Medical Order) and  Medalha de Ouro de Serviços Distintos do Ministério da Saúde (Golden Medal of Distinguished Services from the national Ministry of Health).
