## WHAT IS IT?

### Course Description

In this course, students will learn, from scratch, how to use the LaTeX for processing scientific documents, be it for writing papers, books and theses, or preparing slides. Besides learning about the general approach of LaTeX for the preparation of scientific documents, students should be able to structure documents, typeset mathematical formulas, lists and tables, use and define (basic) environments, import pictures, prepare bibliographic references, and use packages for preparing slides.

This is essentially a "hands-on" course, where all the concepts are to be tested in practical exercises and challenges.

### Syllabus

- Installing LaTeX;
- Structure of LaTeX documents;
- Environments and commands;
- Typesetting of formulae, equations, mathematical arrays and tabular environments;
- Structure of indexes, references and bibliography references;
- Table, figures (including importing of pictures), and other floating texts;
- Introduction to presentations with beamer.

## WHO CAN APPLY?

PhD students at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and PhD holders working at NOVA (Professors, Researchers,...)

The "Scientific Text Processing with LaTeX” course does not require any prior knowledge on LaTeX, nor on programming. However, we assume that students participating in the course:

1) have their own laptop computer, and bring it to the classes;

2) have some familiarity with basic tasks of personal computers’ administration, including with the installation of new programs;

3) have some experience in editing texts in their own scientific area.

### Assessment Methodologies

Students are evaluated by two exercises, each given by the end of each session.

The exercises are similar to the challenges proposed to the students during the sessions, but with bigger dimension, and less supervision.
