ITQB researcher distinguished with an ERC grant of 2.6 million euros

Funding allows the researcher to pursue the study on the resistance to antibiotics.

Mariana Gomes de Pinho distinguida com Bolsa ERC Consolidator

The European Research Council (ERC) distinguished Mariana Gomes de Pinho, researcher at Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica (ITQB NOVA), with a research grant of 2.6 M€. The ERC Consolidator Grant, awarded to scientists with 7 to 12 years of experience, will allow the researcher to pursue her study on the resistence of antibiotics in the next five years.

This is the second time the research of Mariana Gomes de Pinho is recognized by the European Research Council, after being distinguished with an ERC Starting Grant in 2012. With this initial funding, the researcher was able to construct powerful biological tools to study the biology of the cell andto study mechanisms of action of various antimicrobial compounds. With the ERC Consolidator Grant, the researcher is aiming to be able to quickly unravel the function of new players in the bacterial cell cycle and simultaneously contribute to accelerate antibiotic discovery.

Besides Mariana Gomes Pinho, other seven portuguese researchers were also distinguished with this funding.
