NOVA Desporto wins gold in National University Championships of different sports

NOVA sports’ teams reached the first place in five different sports and conquered other silver and bronze medals.

During the last month, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa sport's teams participated in the National University Championships of different sports, where Swimming, Karate, Triathlon, Fencing, Floorball, Golf and Korfball stand out as NOVA conquered several medals.

On Surf’s National Championship, on May 27 in Costa da Caparica, NOVA won four medals, two gold and two silver ones. In the female’s competition Inês Martins conquered gold and Beatriz Burgos won silver, whereas in the male’s competition João Kopke and Kristian Sousa got similar results when getting the first and second place, respectively. These results, in addition to the participation of a delegation of 14 athletes, also granted the first place to NOVA as a team.

NOVA’s athletes also succeeded on Long Course Meters Swimming, winning another four gold medals. In the championship that took place on June 11 in Coimbra, student Catarina Sequeira mastered breaststroke on 50 and 100 meters, while Francisca Azevedo led on 400 meters freestyle and 100 meters backstroke. With the success on the latter, the athlete also broke the National University Record.

On Karate’s competition, on May 28 in Évora, all the four athletes representing NOVA got medals. In the final of -75 kg, disputed only by NOVA students. Rodrigo Pina won the gold medal and Miguel Diz the silver one. On their turn, Raquel Simão and João Xavier both got the bronze medal on their respective categories, -61 kg and -60 kg. The athletes’ performance granted their access to the European University Championship that takes place in Coimbra next July.

NOVA also stood on the podium on the Thiratlon competition that took place on June 10 in Peniche, by conquering the first place with Diogo Silva’s performance. The delegation of five athletes also reached the second place as a team.

Fencing is another featured sport since André Vaz won the gold medal in the “Épée” category.  

Another highlight is the notorious performance of the Floorball team that won second place on June 1st in Porto.

NOVA Desporto was also in the south of Portugal on June 17 and 18, on Golf’s National University Championship. In this sport student Sérgio Francisco got the third place, the same the team got in the collective classification. NOVA got another bronze medal as well in Korfbol’s competition that took place on May 25 in Aveiro.
