On 19 January 2017, Professor António Rendas celebrated ten years serving as Rector of NOVA.
The Rector congratulated the entire academic community on a message in which he noted the progress made by NOVA over the recent years and highlighted "the ability to attract students and faculty both at home and abroad, the quality and impact of the research produced, the increased internationalization with presence in the most prestigious rankings and global networks." He also underlined the recent transformation of NOVA into a public foundation university with private law regime, following the approval by the Council of Ministers in December.
According to the Rector, "The foundational transformation is a means and not an end. NOVA continues to be a public university and must maintain this course, which has allowed it to play a relevant role in Portuguese society, as well as to increase its prestige internationally. "
After ten years, and near the end of his mandate as Rector, Professor Rendas launched a challenge to NOVA’s academic community of thinking about its future.
Specifically, he invited all interested parties to send, by the end of February, an email to reitor@unl.pt, with up to ten initiatives considered relevant to be fulfilled in the next ten years of NOVA.
