Teaching Quality

Teaching Quality, Accreditation and Employability Office is, at the Rectory level, the executive body for NOVA's Teaching Quality Assurance System.
Its main functions are to:

  • prepare the schedule of the annual programme reviews;
  • monitor the operation of the System throughout the University;
  • prepare six-monthly reports, as well as the annual report on the operation of the Teaching Quality Assurance System and on the quality of teaching at the University for submission to the Teaching Quality Council;
  • support the organization of programme reviews;
  • liaise between the University and the national Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education.

The main purpose of the System is to contribute to the continuous improvement of the quality of teaching and learning at NOVA, which includes the interactions between these two dimensions. Bearing this in mind, it was decided to create a structure at central level, involving academic bodies, in order to follow up the operation of the System, as it is shown in the organizational chart below.

Rectoral Team Member

At central level, within the Rectoral Team, is the responsibility for ensuring the teaching quality at NOVA. The Rectoral Team member is, therefore, in charge of:

  • liaising between the Rectoral Team and, in particular, the Rector and the Teaching Quality Council;
  • liaising between the Rectorate and the nine Academic Units, on teaching quality issues;
  • overseeing the activities of the Teaching Quality, Accreditation and Employability Office.

Teaching Quality Council

The Teaching Quality Council (TQC) is the governing body of the Teaching Quality Assurance System and its mission is to ensure the operation of the System across the University.
The TQC is accountable to the Rector for ensuring that an appropriate quality assurance process is in place and, in the first instance, for its design in collaboration with the nine Academic Units.
The TQC has the following functions:

  • to propose, for approval by the Rector, the creation of the appropriate bodies for the proper operation of the Teaching Quality Assurance System at NOVA;
  • to review reports submitted by the Teaching Quality Accreditation and Employability Office;
  • to approve the annual report on the operation of the Teaching Quality Assurance System and on the quality of teaching of NOVA;

 The TQC of NOVA has the following composition:
a) a member assigned by the General Council, who will chair;
b) the Rectoral Team member responsible for the quality of teaching;
c) nine members of the University teaching staff, appointed by the Deans;
d) a member of  NOVA’s Teaching Quality, Accreditation and Employability Office in attendance.
