17 MAR
Zentralblatt MATH Seminar
It will take place on the 17th of March 2009, 9 a.m., at the Auditorium B of UNL's Rectorate, the Zentralblatt MATH seminar.
Speaker: Prof. Bernd Wegner [http://mowgli.cs.unibo.it/html_yes_frames/people/aei/wegner.html]
He has participated with one or more talks at about 20 events on electronic information and communication in 2000, including continental congresses in Lisbon, Coimbra, Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro, Havana, Moscow, and Manila. He has been elected as member of the scientific committee for several conferences on the subject in 2001: (Crimea, Athens, Coimbra, Linz, Guatemala City) and received invitations for plenary lectures at additional conferences.
These activities give an excellent background to organize the information dissemination and exploitation activities for the project.
Zentralblatt MATH (Z-MATH) The editorial concept, the search and navigation facilities, the improvements for the next future
Zentralblatt MATH is the most comprehensive literature information service in mathematics. Reports on all mathematical publications world-wide are provided going back until 1868. It has 140 years of publications in mathematics and its applications to other sciences are covered by about three million references. Another 100.000 items are added annually at present. They are linked to online offers of the corresponding article or book as far as available. Keywords and classification codes provide enhanced information on the content of the articles. Up to a few exceptions all information provided by the Z-MATH database is offered in English, though the original articles may be in any language. At present about 5000 references for articles in Chinese are added to the database annually, for example.
The first part of the presentation will address these general editorial aspects, being considered as the basic requirements for a reasonable literature information system in mathematics. Next a more precise idea will be given of the various search facilities. This includes simple searches for obtaining quick information, advanced searches for information, which is sufficiently precise, but does not miss too many relevant items, and special searches like the look up system for referencing.
The third part reports on advanced information offers, some of them being installed already, and others to be available in the near future. The installed ones include an improved search for authors (authors identification), links for the customer to access local library holdings (open URL), the search history, reference linking and storage.
To come soon are MathML display, a commented journals list, selection for second reviews, journal profiles and, most importantly, access for non-mathematicians.
