Debate Group in Economics and Management of Universidade Nova de Lisboa

The project was initiated after a proposal presented by the Lisbon Debating Society (LDS), for the creation and development, at the Economics and Law faculties of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, of a debate group. The main goal is to stimulate the creation and application of argumentative texts, in order to compare different ideas and opinions.

In this group we strive to demonstrate that debating is different from arguing, which is neither pleasant nor useful. We try to build upon reasonable ideas that can contribute to a conclusion. With teamwork and organization, rules and standards, we try to debate current subjects of interest to all, in order to find out which are the best points of view that can contribute to a successful reflection on the subject at hand and analyse the best argumentative text.

This technique is already developed in several foreign universities (for example: United Kingdom and USA) where inter-university championships take place. The group aims at promoting internal competitions (between faculty students), participate in inter-faculty trials (organized by the qualified national institution - LDS) and possibly represent Portugal or the Economics and Law faculties in international competitions.
