Objectives

To cover taxation both in its positive and normative aspects. To cover indirect taxes, direct taxes and redistribution in modern welfare states. The course looks at the Portuguese welfare state and the final week is devoted to the relation of fiscal policy to the design of multi-level governments.

Subject matter

Taxation and the welfare state: stylized empirical facts, indirect taxation, direct taxation and redistribution, the Portuguese tax and welfare systems and the economics of multi-level governments.
