Education objectives

Microelectronics is a scientific area that joins the Materials Science, Physics and Electronics so to design and implement integrated miniaturized devices and systems, where the compaction and densification of the components are a key factor. Thus, the specialty of microelectronics must include a project area and design of circuits and devices, and another, materials processing and devices.

Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary science, in which engineers: materials, mechanical, electrical and doctors are working together with biologists, physicists and chemists. The union of nanoscale research is due to the need to share knowledge on tools and techniques as well as on expertise in the field of atomic and molecular interactions in this new scientific frontier.

The growing demand by the Industry of Engineers with the appropriate profile for the design, fabrication and characterization of electronic components and integrated systems led to the creation of the Master in Engineering Microelectronics and Nanotechnology. The importance of Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology and the need for training of technicians and researchers in this area at national and European justifies the existence of a master with these characteristics.

The Master of Microelectronic Engineering and Nanotechnology (only in Portugal) is coordinated by the Department of Materials Science and act in a concerted and multidisciplinary, the different levels necessary for the project and design of a circuit / integrated system.

Evaluation rules

The following modes of evaluation are used with regard to academic qualifications:

  1. Evaluation based solely on an examination or completion of a final project.
  2. Evaluation based on work done throughout the semester excluding examination or final project. In these courses students can expect to carry out, for example, laboratory activities, mini-tests, tests, individual or group projects, seminar-related activities, any combination of which will be used to determine the final grade.
  3. Evaluation based obligatorily on an examination or a final project. In these courses there extists a form of evaluation similar to one of the aformentioned activities in paragraph 2 as well as a form of evaluation based on a final exam.
