Education objectives

Materials Engineering is the application to the industrial technologies of the knowledge pertaining to the properties, the processing routes, the use of and design with advanced materials: high-tech metallic alloys, composites, structural and functional ceramics, polymers, electronics materials, biomaterials, ecomaterials, and so on…

The Materials Engineering MSc course covers 4 distinct profiles, designed to be flexible enough to cope with the student’s aspirations and preferences, while simultaneously attending to the work-market needs. These profiles are named:

  1. Materials for Electronics;
  2. Materials and Engineering;
  3. Materials, Environment and Life;
  4. Materials and Energy.

The Master in Materials Engineering is apt to actively participate in the strong competition which characterizes today’s markets, and is able to and decidedly and positively contribute to the solution of the most demanding technical, social and environmental problems. To that aim, the student acquires competences on the selection, use and development of new, better materials, while also gathering multi-disciplinary and innovation skills needed to insure the most economically and environmentally effective development and production of classic and novel materials.

Employment perspectives

Resting upon a solid experience gathered since 1981 in the preparation of materials engineering professionals, FCT/UNL’s Materials Engineering MSc course confers the technological and scientific formation most adequate to a successful professional performance within the following activity areas:

Evaluation rules

The following modes of evaluation are used with regard to academic qualifications:

  1. Evaluation based solely on an examination or completion of a final project.
  2. Evaluation based on work done throughout the semester excluding examination or final project. In these courses students can expect to carry out, for example, laboratory activities, mini-tests, tests, individual or group projects, seminar-related activities, any combination of which will be used to determine the final grade.
  3. Evaluation based obligatorily on an examination or a final project. In these courses there extists a form of evaluation similar to one of the aformentioned activities in paragraph 2 as well as a form of evaluation based on a final exam.
  4. Evaluation based on work do
