Debating Nucleus in the UNL Schools of Economics and Law
The “Debating Nucleus” Project began with the proposal made by the Lisbon Debating Society (LDS) suggesting the creation and development of a debating group in the UNL Schools of Economics and Law Its main purpose is to stimulate the creation and application of argumentative texts, aiming at confronting of ideas and opinions.
The aim of this group is to prove that debating is different from arguing, that debating is neither unpleasant nor useless, but rather an attempt to sustain certain opinions that will lead to a conclusion. Within a framework of team spirit, in an organized manner with set standards and rules, current issues of general interest will be debated, in order to ascertain which are the best points of view, and the best argumentative text.
This activity is already carried out in universities abroad (e.g. Great Britain, EUA), where competitions between universities are held. The Core intends to organize internal debates (among students), to participate in inter-school competitions, organized by LDS – the competent body at national level, and to represent Portugal, or the Schools of Economics and Law in international competitions.

PUMAP
PUMAP is volunteer project created in 2005 by students of the Faculdade de Economia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Every year, a group of students from several schools of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa goes to Maputo, in Mozambique, during the months of July and August, to do volunteer work in the educational area. PUMAP has been growing and it presently has 3 areas of action:
The investment in education is also complemented with the development and support of day-to-day activities of the "Missionárias da Caridade" and Mozambique’s Red Cross, as well as participation in activities for HIV/AIDS prevention with the Doctors of the World association.
The main objectives of the project are centred in education and social responsibility, which are questions not very developed in a country like Mozambique.
Applications and the selection process occur at the beginning of each school year, followed by months of hard work that are certainly compensated in Maputo.

Students associations
The FEUNL Students Association (AEFEUNL - Associação de Estudantes da FEUNL) is the representative of the more than 2000 students of the school. It was created in 1984 and it has the main objective of representing and defending the interests of FEUNL students.
The Association is formed by a group of more than 40 students, divided by different branches, with diverse areas of intervention. Our presence in the schooll’s life is permanent. Our activities happen all through the school year and are dedicated to diverse audiences.
To help students prepare for evaluation we sell collections of exams and tests in our headquarters (Floor 0) and we organize test preparation sessions.
We are responsible for organizing diverse seminars: "Gestão de Activos" (together with BPI), "Ciência Política" and "Banca de Investimento" (presented by specialists from Barclays Capital).
We also worry about the personal development of students and we try to introduce competing spirit and fair-play with other Universities, for what we have 5 sports teams in the University Championships: Soccer, Rugby,Futsal, basketball and Women’s
Volleyball.
We also work with students in the community, in cultural activities (theatre, comedy, music, painting, writing, cooking), as well as in helping those in need (all the campaign of "Banco Alimentar Contra a Fome" in the Corte Ingles supermarkets is coordinated by AEFEUNL).
In a more entertainment side, we privilege the good spirit and good mood between students. So we also invest in galas, radical weekends, parties or dinners with Erasmus students.
It is also the Students Association that discusses with the school''s and university boards the pedagogical issues through the presence in the "Assembleia de Representantes", "Conselho Pedagógico" and "Conselho de Estudantes".
