IHMT was founded on the 24th of April 1902 by order of King D. Carlos, with the original name of Escola de Medicina Tropical (Tropical Medicine School). After more than one hundred years of existence, it has had several administrations, names and facilities, with the same initial goal of developing the scientific knowledge of tropical and intertropical health related issues. The current facilities of IHMT were built in 1958. The institute was integrated in UNL, along with the current denomination, on the 28th of May 1980 (Decree-Law n.º 164/80).
IHMT has been recognized at national and international level, not only for its history, but also for its scientific quality in post-graduate teaching, research and contribute for the health development of the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Brazil and East Timor.
It has contributed to the institutional strengthening and cohesion of UNL, by combining its centenary history with the innovation and excellence of its scientific activity. Within the strategy of UNL, IHMT has been following an administrative and scientific policy of increasing mobility amongst the different academic schools of UNL, in order to create new and innovative fields of action.
Through its training programme, IHMT has made an effort to be a reference in the Portuguese-speaking countries, by answering the needs of these countries and sharing its knowledge with other academic schools, through the creation of new post-graduate courses and teaching programmes, with the goal of exploring new themes and specializations, which are vital in today's global society.
In the field of scientific research, IHMT has attained a level of excellence recognized at national and international level, which is mainly focused on Tropical Medicine and in health related areas considered problematic in developing countries.
In terms of development for cooperation, IHMT has the clear goal of being a national reference, with the ability of conceptualizing, programming, executing and assessing cooperation projects for health development, as a privileged interlocutor of the Portuguese-speaking countries governments at UNL.
IHMT has a policy of establishing cooperation protocols with other higher education institutions and organizations, both national and international, namely the European tropical medicine schools, health and education institutions from the Portuguese-speaking countries, World Health Organization, European Union, World Bank, among others.
