Description
The name Universidade Nova de Lisboa(Nova) stands for creativity and innovation. Proud of its youth, as one of the most recent public universities within the Lisbon metropolitan area, Nova spans through three councils: Lisboa, Almada and Oeiras.
Nova currently has 16.660 students, about 1 100 teachers and 743 non-academic staff, distributed through five faculties, three institutes and one school, providing a wide range of courses in all fields of knowledge. It offers 29 graduate courses (1st cycle), 104 masters (2nd cycle) – 3 of which are Erasmus Mundus – and 11 integrated master’s programmes, besides doctoral (3rd cycle) and postgraduate courses.
The application of the Bologna Declaration principles to all courses from the 1st and 2nd cycle, as well as an increasing number of 3rd cycle proposals, is a clear indicator of Nova’s capacity to present itself as an European higher education institution. An example of this capacity is the Erasmus Programme, in which the Universidade Nova de Lisboa has participated with great success since its creation in 1987. According to the last figures provided by the European Commission, in a universe of 3.000 European higher education institutions, during the period of 2004-2005, Nova ranked 47th in outgoing students and occupied the 66th position in incoming students.
Nova integrates 39 scientific research centres in several areas, funded by theFundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia(Science and Technology Foundation). In its last assessment, the foundation graded 24 of them as “excellent” or “very Good”, accounting for 62%. The Universidade Nova de Lisboa also runs four associated laboratories, three of which in partnership with other research institutions.
The excellent quality of research in many areas, is also a cornerstone in the international culture of Nova, spanning beyond the European borders into Africa and the Americas.
The university is thus actively involved in cooperation actions promoted by the Portuguese Government, in particular with North-American universities, such as the University of Texas at Austin (UTA), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), namely in master’s courses and doctoral and research programmes.
The singularity of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa Project lies in its respect for the individuality of each academic unit, each having acquired its image and prestige within the freedom, diversity and tolerance that have been the guidelines of Nova. One further aim of the project is the strengthening of the cohesion between units in order to take the best possible advantage of the synergies that can thus be generated and developed.
This clear option for a unique but diversified identity, working not only as a network of institutions but also of projects, people and resources, characterizes Nova as a university that is open to the world and willing to take part in the challenges presented by the 21st Century.
