Description

Located in the centre of Lisbon since its creation in 1977, the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities) is a multidisciplinary unit promoting diversity of knowledge, creativity and freedom of thought.
Since the academic year 2006/2007, all undergraduate programs are structured according to the Bologna Agreement. Currently, FCSH offers 14 1st cycle undergraduate programmes, 47 2nd cycle Master programmes and 21 Doctoral programmes. All of them are organized in accordance to Bologna’s guidelines, enhancing, therefore, the mobility and internationalization of our students. Every year, FCSH hosts over 300 foreigner students and sends over 200 students to universities abroad.
The teaching and research activities developed at FCSH ensure a solid scientific training in the different domains of Social Sciences and Humanities. Flexibility is a distinctive feature in structuring the academic profile of students, both in Undergraduate and in Post-graduate Programs. The development of competences in all areas enables the autonomy of life-long learning.
Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas produces a high number of MA and PhD dissertations every year, which reinforces the link between teaching and research activities.
The research units hosted at FCSH are a solid reference both nationally and internationally. Currently, besides some units dedicated to applied research, to knowledge transfer, and to cooperation or cultural diffusion, FCSH has 16 research units with a positive evaluation by the national foundation for science and technology (FCT) and sponsored by its pluriannual funding program. 14 out of these 16 research units were classified as Excelent or Very Good in the last assessement. These units include over 1.200 researchers holding a PhD degree. The high number of research projects evaluated, the activities for knowledge transfer, the applied research and the presence of researchers in international scientific networks make FCSH a leading institution within Universidade Nova de Lisboa. The high level quality of the research carried on in this school and its international profile provide evidence for the leading status of FCSH in Portugal as a reference institution in the area of Social and Human Sciences.
