Education objectives
1. To understand and to describe the way by which language activity, in both spoken and written forms, is part of a more general set of communicative activities; 2. To acquire basic knowledge, within various frameworks, in main areas of linguistics – phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse – fundamental for an understanding of language activity; 3. To understand the mechanisms underlying language variation and change phenomena and to use adequate methods and theoretical concepts; 4. To understand and to describe the relationships between language and cognition, language and society, and language and discourse; 5. To develop abilities to analyse, describe and explain the functioning of different natural languages, assessing the appropriateness of distinct theoretical frameworks; 6. To master basic techniques of linguistic data collection, analysis and interpretation; 7. To develop abilities to use new technologies in the study and analysis of spoken and written linguistic productions; 8. To develop competences for the application of the acquired knowledge to different areas, e.g. language pathologies, translation studies, language teaching/learning, elaboration of scientific, didactic and lexicographic tools, among others.
Access conditions
Completion of secondary education, with a minimum entry grade of 9.5 on a scale of 0 to 20. Students may also be admitted to Higher Education through special access and entry systems, re-enrolment systems, course changes and transfers.
Degree pre-requisites
Each student must obtain 180 credits: 120 credits from compulsory courses of the study programme, 30 credits from restricted options among which the student takes either the 12-credit Language Sciences Seminar or the 12-credit Work Experience in Language Sciences, and 30 credits from free options or a Minor from another academic area. Each semester the student may not enrol in more than 30 credits and must respect any pre-requisites which have been set. At the beginning of each semester, the student is advised as to which courses are the most appropriate for their academic pathway and which they should take.
Access to other courses
Completion of the licenciatura degree allows the holder to apply for Masters programmes, or other post-graduate courses including those which do not confer a degree.
Evaluation rules
Assessment is in accordance with the assessment regulations approved by the competent statutory body.
