Education objectives
1) To be familiar with the basic theories and concepts of Geography;
2) To acquire basic concepts in the areas of Environment, Land Planning and Development, and Geographic Information Sciences;
3) To master methods and techniques of geographical analysis (data collection, selection, treatment and interpretation) and to apply these in geocomputational and real contexts;
4) To acquire the ability to observe and interpret landscape;
5) To articulate theoretical-practical knowledge with the needs of present-day society, contributing to deliberating on problems and proposing solutions in relation to environment, land planning and development;
6) To interpret the diversity and complexity of the land and the interrelationship of phenomena of an environmental nature with others of an economic, social and cultural nature;
7) To articulate geographical know-how with other know-hows, particularly when collaborating in multidisciplinary teams,
8) To communicate knowledge and know-how in the field of geography to different publics.
Access conditions
Completion of secondary education, with a minimum entry grade of 9.5 on a scale of 0 to 20. Students may also be admitted to Higher Education through special access and entry systems, re-enrolment systems, course changes and transfers. More information: http://www.acessoensinosuperior.pt
Degree pre-requisites
Each student must obtain 180 credits: 120 credits from compulsory courses of the study programme, 30 credits from restricted options with 12 of these credits being obtained for one of the following courses: a) Work Experience in Geography; b) Seminar in Environment and Natural Resources; c) Seminar in Remote Detection and GIS; d) Seminar in Land Planning and Management; e) Seminar in Land and Development, and 30 credits from free options or a Minor from another academic area. Each semester the student may not enrol in more than 30 credits and must respect any pre-requisites which have been set. At the beginning of each semester, the student is advised as to which courses are the most appropriate for their academic pathway and which they should take.
Access to other courses
Completion of the licenciatura degree allows the holder to apply for Masters programmes, or other post-graduate courses including those which do not confer a degree.
Evaluation rules
Assessment is in accordance with the assessment regulations approved by the competent statutory body.
