Education objectives
The doctoral programme in Human Ecology seeks to provide advanced training for graduates and those with Master’s degrees in the areas of Social Sciences and Humanities and graduates and those with Master’s from other areas of study who seek to
acquire or develop knowledge in this area within a multidisciplinary approach. It offers a continuum of training and specialization of knowledge for all those who have completed a Master’s in Human Ecology and Contemporary Social Issues at the FCSH Faculty, or in related fields and who wish to proceed to the 3rd Cycle of Studies.
The course is designed with the aim of preparing students to obtain a doctoral degree, by acquiring the necessary skills for those who want to develop research projects in the academic field of Human Ecology or those who want to contribute in their area of work in a business context, so as to take more informed decisions.
Degree pre-requisites
The curriculum has been designed with a duration of four academic years with a first academic year aimed at in-depth training in this area and also preparating the plan of work to carry out the thesis, followed by three academic years to write the dissertation.
Evaluation rules
1. Curriculum Modules to be held in the 1st year of the programme:
- 2 Curriculum Units with the aim of providing in-depth knowledge of the theories and practices of human ecology (20 ECTS);
- 1 Curriculum Unit with the aim of developing specific research skills in human ecology (10 ECTS);
- 1 Curriculum Unit option which students can choose from any of the 3rd cycle curriculum modules, which can provide added value to both their training and the subject of their dissertation (10 ECTS);
- 1 Multidisciplinary Curriculum Unit following which the student must have chosen a theme and have a well defined research problem with an organised scheme of work for the dissertation (20 ECTS).
2. During the three academic years following the completion of the curricular part of the course the student must write a dissertation, which is allocated 180 ECTS.
No internships are envisaged as part of the mandatory training.
