Education objectives
The study cycle’s objectives are:
1. To qualify students for the use of advanced skills, methods, concepts and theories essential for the study of Urban Studies in an interdisciplinary context at postgraduate level;
2. To give students the opportunity to apply these advanced methods, concepts and theories in both general and more specialised contexts;
3. To introduce students to new and intellectually demanding areas of Urban Studies;
4. To foster and develop students’ ability to think critically the problems in Urban Studies
5. To foster students’ ability to carry out independent research in urban studies
Access conditions
Those who can be admitted to this programme include:
a) Holders of an MA degree or legal equivalent;
b) Holders of undergraduate degree, with an especially relevant academic or scientific curriculum, officially recognized by the institutions granting the degree as attesting ability for carrying over this cycle of studies;

Degree pre-requisites
The program is organized in 8 semesters, corresponding to a total amount of 240 credits. These follow the model adapted for PhD courses at FCSH, as the result of an agreement between the two institutions. The first two semesters aim at deepening the education in the area of urban studies with a particular focus on the multidisciplinarity.
Evaluation rules
- 3 CUs (10 credits each) for deepening the knowledge of theories and methodologies pertaining to urban studies.
- 1 CU (10 credits) freely chosen by the student amongst the offer available in both institutions (UNL/ISCTEIUL) or other public institution of higher education provided that there is an agreement or obtained through research within one of the research units associated to the course. Was taken as a basis for calculating the total hours, the values practiced in the institution that submits the proposal, which resulted from a decision
upheld by the Pedagogical Council.
- 1 CU (20 credits) under a multidisciplinary approach in support to the writing of the thesis Project. This project is publicly evaluated by a committee nominated in accordance to FCSH’s internal regulation for PhD courses.
Upon approval of the dissertation Project, the student will be able to develop his doctoral research based on the Project. For this, s/he must register the topic and title of the dissertation, indicating the advisor. The following 6 semesters will be dedicated to the research leading to the writing of the doctoral dissertation, with individual guidance. At the end of every year, the doctoral candidate must present a progress report. This course does not comprise internships as part of the obligatory formation.
