Subject matter

What is knowing?
What does it mean to know something? Do we adequately understand what knowledge is? Focusing on Plato’s Theaetetus, Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason and Wittgenstein’s On Certainty and Last Writings on the Philosophy of Psychology, we shall explore the following themes: 1) our knowledge of the world, of other selves and of ourselves; 2) experience and recognition; 3) the distinction between subject and object; 4) the multifaceted character of intentional acts; 5) immediate and representative knowledge; 6) perception, apperception, imagination and reason; 7) the empirical and the transcendental; 8) empiricism and rationalism; 9) dogmatism, scepticism and criticism; 10) opinion, belief and knowledge; 11) conviction, persuasion and certainty; 12) theoretical and practical certainty.
