Objectives
a) To acquire the theoretical knowledge necessary for the study the complex historical, social and cultural context of European Renaissance.
b) To acquire the the fundamental knowledge of the historical, cultural and philosophical of context of Portuguese Renaissance.
c) To promote the necessary autonomy to interpret the selected texts.
Prerequisites
None.
Subject matter
1 - Periodization and contamination of historical periods; spatial and temporal conditions and frontiers; main and subordinated cultural expressions.
2 - Renaissance as historical period and historical movement; Renaissance and the Middle Ages; Renaissance and Classical Antiquity.
3 - Humanist culture and the new directions of thought and action; the religious renewal; the scientific and technical progresses.
4 - The European movement and Portuguese cultural dynamics; European echoes and the new of maritime expansion; the historical and cultural movement and specificity of Portuguese Renaissance.
5 - Portuguese Renaissance Humanism; the literary movement and the questioning of cultural contents; medieval criticism and controversy; the changes of Portuguese humanism.
6 - Descobrimentos and Portuguese renaissance culture; the debate of ideas, the scientific, technical and civilization progress, maritime expansion and its contradictions in Portuguese culture.
