Education objectives
Environmental Engineering is a branch of engineering devoted to the comprehensive study of environmental and development issues, in their ecologic, social and economic dimensions — a perspective of sustainability. Environmental engineers educated at FCT-UNL are able to conceive, plan, project, manage and execute solutions, with the Environment as their core business; they command the language of many disciplines, working often in interdisciplinary teams and in advanced research.
The Environmental Engineering MSc program at FCT-UNL was originally created in 1977 — one of the first in Europe — having recently been adapted to the Bologna process. It is considered the reference Environmental Engineering program in Portugal, having pioneered most domains that define Environmental Engineering today.
The program is offered in four specializations:
- Sanitary Engineering, focused on water, wastewater and wastes management and treatment, hydraulics and water resources;
- Land Use Management and Impacts, focused on environmental impact assessment, environmental planning and land use management;
- Environmental Management and Systems, focused on environment and energy management, environmental economics, environmental information and modelling;
- Ecologic Engineering, focused on natural resources management, nature conservation and rehabilitation, and environmental quality.
Learning on-the-job and employment are warranted by multiple university-company partnerships. Environmental engineers are thus well prepared for jobs at a variety of institutions:
- Public service at national, regional or local level;
- European and international agencies;
- Industrial companies;
- Service companies;
- Engineering, consultancy and auditing;
- Higher education and research.

Evaluation rules
The following modes of evaluation are used with regard to academic qualifications:
- Evaluation based solely on an examination or completion of a final project.
- Evaluation based on work done throughout the semester excluding examination or final project. In these courses students can expect to carry out, for example, laboratory activities, mini-tests, tests, individual or group projects, seminar-related activities, any combination of which will be used to determine the final grade.
