Debating Nucleus in the UNL Schools of Economics and Law

The “Debating Nucleus” Project began with the proposal made by the Lisbon Debating Society (LDS) suggesting the creation and development of a debating group in the UNL Schools of Economics and Law Its main purpose is to stimulate the creation and application of argumentative texts, aiming at confronting of ideas and opinions.

The aim of this group is to prove that debating is different from arguing, that debating  is neither unpleasant nor useless, but rather an attempt to sustain certain opinions that will lead to a conclusion.  Within a framework of team spirit, in an organized manner with set standards and rules, current issues of general interest will be debated, in order to ascertain which are the best points of view, and the   best argumentative text.

This activity is already carried out in universities abroad (e.g. Great Britain, EUA), where competitions between universities are held. The Core intends to organize internal debates (among students), to participate in inter-school competitions, organized by LDS – the competent body at national level, and to represent Portugal, or the Schools of Economics and Law in international competitions.

We also worry about the personal development of students and we try to introduce competing spirit and fair-play with other Universities, for what we have 5 sports teams in the University Championships: Soccer, Rugby,Futsal, basketball and Women’s
    Volleyball
    .

We also work with students in the community, in cultural activities (theatre, comedy, music, painting, writing, cooking), as well as in helping those in need (all the campaign of "Banco Alimentar Contra a Fome" in the Corte Ingles supermarkets is coordinated by AEFEUNL).

In a more entertainment side, we privilege the good spirit and good mood between students. So we also invest in galas, radical weekends, parties or dinners with Erasmus students.

It is also the Students Association that discusses with the school''s and university boards the pedagogical issues through the presence in the "Assembleia de Representantes", "Conselho Pedagógico" and "Conselho de Estudantes".
