Description

The Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) is an academic unit of  NOVA University of Lisbon (UNL) since 1977. Currently, it has about 1500 students in the undergraduate level, 1342 in the graduate levels and 389 teachers and researchers, of whom 30 are PHD graduators and 15% are working in a full-time regime at FCM. In the headquarters, located in Campo Mártires da Pátria, in Lisbon, are located the departments of education and research of the early years of the course the administrative and logistics structures to support postgraduate and life-long education, the library and the documentation center, the cafeteria and administrative offices, as well as noble buildings with a artistic heritage of great historical value to Portuguese medicine. The clinical teaching takes place in health institutions articulated with the FCM.

FCM offers a wide range of courses and graduate programs in different areas of health. It has several masters degree, two doctoral programs (in Medicine and Life Sciences) and collaborates with other universities in the Program for Advanced Training Course hold by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the PhD in Aging and Degeneration of Complex Biological Systems. In research area, FCM has an increasing number of excellence groups in areas like biomedicine, translational research, epidemiology and clinical research and services, integrated in CEDOC (Center for the Study of Chronic Diseases). The recent association with the Oeiras Associate Laboratory, in collaboration with the ITQB, the Gulbenkian Institute of Science and the IBET, has contributed to create a research center in health, which will surely play an important role in the country. In another hand, FCM is involved in the modernization of medical education in Portugal and it was from here that are emerging some of the pioneering experiments for the development of medical education based on PBL (problem based learning) and conducting mandatory internships in health centers. This know-how has been of great importance judging by the results of the final exam, conducted by the Ministry of Health, where they have achieved good results at a national level. Since 2010, FCM began a process of curriculum revision, in order to make the course more focused on students' educational needs and in the priority health problems of communities by focusing on the integration of knowledge and learning by PBL and encouraging an early contact with clinical practice through a better coordination between the basic and the clinical areas. On the development and consolidation of his innovation plan in teaching and research, the FCM has three key goals in the coming years:

- The creation of the a Clinical Skills Laboratory
- The opening, scheduled for 2012, of the new Biomedical Research Center in Santanas campus (where it was the former Institute Câmara Pestana).
- The future construction of a new hospital in Lisbon (East Hospital), projected to become the nuclear FCMs hospital.
