Description

Founded in 1977, the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas - FCSH (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities) is an interdisciplinary unit with teaching and research objectives, characterized by the diversity and creativity of knowledge. Located near Lisbon city center, it hosts a total of 5269 students, 2909 in undergraduate programmes, 1718 in masters and 642 in PhD programmes. It has 306 professors, almost all holding PhD degrees. The guest professors are distinguished personalities in their area of expertise and most of them hold a PhD degrees.

Assuming the task of qualifying citizens to the highest level, FCSH offers 14 undergraduate programmes (three of them in after-work schedule), during which students can benefit from mobility initiatives (e.g.: Erasmus), annually involving more than 350 students. Since 2010/11, graduated students can benefit from the Leonardo da Vinci Programme that provides professional traineeships across the European Union.

In graduate training, FCSH offers 7 postgraduate programmes, 44 masters degrees and 20 PhDs, all provided in after-work schedule. Seven masters degrees and four PhD’s are offered in association with 14 national institutions. In academic year 2010/11, 64 PhD’s were successfully finished.

The excellence of Social and Human Sciences Research, one of the vocations of FCSH, is assured by 19 research centres assessed by international panels from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) – two of them rated as “Excellent” and 12 as “Very Good” – that gather more than 600 researchers integrated in FCT. The Faculty also has 36 researchers included in Programa Ciência 2007/08, and it hosts 188 PhD’s scholarships and 157 postdoctoral researchers. These results launch FCSH towards a position of major importance in the national and international university panorama.
