Objectives

a) Becoming aware of the importance of historial and cultural knowledge as a support for the intellegibility of the contemporary world
b) Being able to have a critical insight into concepts and their transformation
c) Being able to establish a comparatist method of analysis
d) Acquiring a taste for the multi-disciplinary study as a means to understand cultural phenomena in the contemporary world
e) Developing notions such as cultural relativism

Subject matter

1.Society, Culture and Individuality. The Society of Prometheus vs. The Society of Narcissus. Portugal as an “intellegible” country
2. Symbols of the actual contemporary condition: on the myths of Prometheus, Narcissus, Edipo and Faust
3. The major importance of the emergence of the history of daily habits and of the private life to the evolution of cultural studies
4. Interlacing the history of daily habits and the history of culture : main themes; Death, the Woman, Family, Sexuality, Hygiene, Daily Habits, etc.
