Description
The Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica of Universidade Nova de Lisboa is an advanced research and training unit in the fields of Chemistry and Biology, where fundamental research comes together with applied research. More than 400 researchers – including 190 PhD holders and 160 graduate students - work at the 62 current laboratories.
With a great diversity of research themes and methodologies, ITQB provides a broad scope on scientific issues and stimulates the cooperation between research groups. ITQB researchers have excellent facilities, equipments and research support services at their disposal, contributing to a motivating working environment.
The scientific quality of the Institute is reflected in the number of scientific papers published in international peer-reviewed journals and in the researcher’s success in securing competitive national and international funds. The cooperative and international nature of the ITQB’s scientific activity is also evident in the collaborations established with other research institutions and companies worldwide.
ITQB maintains a strong partnership with three other institutions: Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica (IBET), a non-profit private institution in the research-industry interface; Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), from Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, dedicated to biology and biomedicine, and the Chronic Diseases Research Center from the Faculdade de Ciências Médicas of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (CEDOC) with a strong connection to medicine. This association constitutes a "Laboratório Associado" (Associated Laboratory) with the Ministry Education and Science, recognizing the existence of an excellent scientific cluster in the Life Sciences, Health and Biotechnology.
The quality and diversity of research and researchers make ITQB an exceptional centre for scientific training. The strong laboratorial component of the advanced training at ITQB is complemented with a PhD programme that aims to provide a broad perspective of life sciences, while keeping the in-depth specialized research component that is essential for a PhD degree. The ITQB PhD programme includes, as curricular units, Chemistry and Structural Biology, Cell and Microbial Biology, Biotechnology, Bioentrepreneurship, and Science Culture and Society, Research Training, Free Option and Research Project.
Besides providing advanced education at the PhD level (degrees in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology and and Technological and Engineering Sciences), the training activities of ITQB include short-term internships (1st and 2nd cycle), research projects for young graduates,Post-graduate and University Extension courses , a Master in Medical Microbiology and a Master in Science Communication.
