Description

Founded in 1977, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (FCSH/NOVA) is an interdisciplinary unit with teaching and research objectives, characterized by the diversity and creativity of knowledge.

Located near Lisbon city center, it hosts a total of 5 269 students, 2 869 in undergraduate programmes, 1 522 in masters and 848 in PhD programmes. It has 209 professors, almost all holding PhD degrees. The guest professors are distinguished personalities in their area of expertise and most of them hold a PhD degrees.

Assuming the task of qualifying citizens to the highest level, FCSH/NOVA offers 14 undergraduate programmes (one of them in after-work schedule), during which students can benefit from mobility initiatives (e.g.: Erasmus), annually involving more than 470 students.

Since 2010/11, graduated students can benefit from the Leonardo da Vinci Programme that provides professional traineeships across the European Union.

In graduate training, FCSH/NOVA offers 12 postgraduate programmes, 48 masters degrees and 23 PhDs, all provided in after-work schedule. Two postgraduate programmes, eight masters degrees and seven PhD’s are offered in association with 14 national and international institutions.

FCSH/NOVA houses 25 Research Centres and branches of interuniversity centres. There are 19 centres financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia), 14 of which are classified as Excellent or Very Good.

Currently, the growing academic community at FCSH/NOVA has about 1 200 researchers who are integrated and/or associated to a Research Centre, as well as many other co-researchers, students and research grantholders.

There are currently a hundred pure and applied research projects taking place in these Research Centres at FCSH/NOVA, financed by FCT and by several other public and private institutions. Besides these, there are several international projects, in which the research centres participate as partners.

This dynamic contributes to a growing visibility of the Faculty’s research activity.

Pedro Hispano Programme – Doctoral Studies

The Pedro Hispano Programme – Doctoral Studies in Social Sciences and Humanities – aims to foster academic excellence, interdisciplinarity and internationalisation of all PhD programmes at FCSH/NOVA, through a set of joint initiatives:
- The Lisbon Winter School in Research Skills;
- The Lisbon Summer School in Social Sciences and Humanities;
- The Lisbon Graduate Conference, in which PhD candidates get together in Lisbon to present and discuss their research results;
- The Pedro Hispano Lectures delivered by academic experts.

FCT PhD’s Programmes

The FCSH/NOVA, as a proponent entity, has seen approved four PhD’s Programmes by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia), conceded at national level in the area of social sciences and humanities.

These four PhD’s programmes are the following:
- Artistic Studies - Art and Mediations, coordinated by Professor João Mário Grilo and with the participation of three research units (Philosophy of Language Institute – IFL/FCSH/NOVA; Institute for the History of Art – IHA/FCSH/NOVA; Ethnomusicology Institute - Music and Dance Research Centre – INET-md/FCSH/NOVA);
- Globalization Studies, coordinated by Professor Nuno Severiano Teixeira and with the participation of three research units (Institute of Contemporary History – IHC/FCSH/NOVA; Environment and Sustainability Research Centre (CENSE); Centre for Sociological Studies of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa - CESNOVA/FCSH/NOVA);
- Linguistics - Knowledge, Representation and Use, coordinated by Professor João Costa and with the participation of one research unit (Linguistics Research Centre - CLUNL/FCSH/NOVA);
- Anthropology: Politics and Displays of Culture and Museology, coordinated by Professor Nélia Susana Dias and with the participation of two research units (Anthropology Network Research Centre - CRIA; Ethnomusicology Institute - Music and Dance Research Centre – INET-md/FCSH/NOVA).

The study scholarships can be conceded to national and foreign candidates.
