Education objectives
This is a program associating FCSH and Escola Sup. de Saúde (ESS) from Inst. Politécnico de Setúbal. Its goals are:
1.Capacity for developing and deepening theoretical knowledge and methodological and technical skills towards the development of original research in the area of Language Sciences, with a special emphasis on Language Acquistion, Development and Child Language Impairment;
2.Capacity for developing a critical reflection on different theoretical proposals from Linguistics and its relation with applied areas;
3.Capacity for applying the theoretical acquisitions on individual and/or joint original research initiatives,
4.Capacity for using the new technologies and apply them in the development of new products in the domains of acquisition, language development, language impairment and language teaching, whenever the processing of complex information is at stake;
5.Capacity for developing projects in interdisciplinary teams;
6.Capacity for developing new strategies and applying new technological resources in professional areas related to language development and diagnosis and intervention in children with impairment in oral and written language;
7.Capacity for carrying on research leading to the writing of an original dissertation on a subject in the domain of Language Sciences, relevant for building knowledge on language development and/or child language impairment, and for an efficient intervention;
8.Capacity for organizing and managing programs in the area of Language Impairment taking into account the functional content of the candidate’s job.
Access conditions
The application and enrollment for 2012/2013 take place in two periods: 1st period: May 2 – July 20 (ESS-IPS and FCSH-UNL). 2nd period: September 10-28 (FCSH-UNL) 1) Candidates should hold a degree on Speech Therapy, Child Education, or Basic Education (1st cycle). 2) Exceptionally, candidates holding other degrees can be considered by the relevant scientific bodies of the two institutions. 3) The norms for application are advertised by FCSH and by ESS through the academic services. 4) Applications are evaluated by a committee, designated by the Course Direction, made of 3 faculty members (criteria for student selection: undergraduate classification, academic, scientific and professional CV, and global assessment). 5) The nominal list of candidates admitted and excluded, as well as the deadline for enrollment, is made public by the official channels of FCSH and ESS.
Degree pre-requisites
2nd cycle program from Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa in association with Escola Superior de Saúde, Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal.
Duration: 4 semesters. Total credits: 120 credits (60 in courses + 60 in dissertation or project)

Evaluation rules
1)No obligatory precedences for attending the program’s courses. 2) Knowledge evalutation in the courses is individual and takes place at the end of each semester. The following tools will be considered: final oral and/or written assignments, papers or other assessment tools, in conditions to be agreed upon with each lecturer. The result of the evaluation is expressed in a mark from 0 to 20. 3) Approval in a course requires a final grade equal to or above 10. 4) Only those students who have obtained 60 ECTs on the scholar part of the program can proceed to the dissertation or project. 5) For the evaluation of the dissertation and project, please consult FCSH’s relevant regulations.
