Objectivos
The main goal of this class is to understand the specific properties, weakness and strengths of Geospatial Free Open Source Software (FOSS4G) Technologies, to promote its usage. The objectives are:
- FOSS4G overview and communities
- FOSS4G development methodology
- The importance of Standards for FOSS4G
- Overview of FOSS4G Technologies:
- RDBMS supporting SFS
- Geo Web Services
- FOSS4G Desktop GIS
- FOSS4G Web GIS
- XML and Scripting
- FOSS4G libraries
- Virtual Globes Interoperability
- FOSS4G and COTS Interoperability

Conteúdo
The contents of this units are:
- Introduction to OSS. Discussion of selected case studies.
- Methodologies, communities and OSS supporting tools. The OSGeo initiative.
- Interoperability, standards and basic computer science related concepts. How standards (de facto or de júri) and important to support application interoperability. The fundamental concept of separation between contents and presentation. Development by composition. Formal methods and FOSS4G certification.
- Overview of FOSS4G Technologies, from data storage and management to web interaction. Additional technologies will be addressed, namely XML and scripting.
