Education objectives

The PhD Programme aims to train researchers, academics, and leaders in innovation processes in fundamental and applied areas of Digital Media, ensuring that Phds are prepared to exercise a profession, which consists, generally, the ability to :
- Create, produce and distribute digital media, taking into account the target audience and the whole value chain associated with the field;
- Manage creative teams and producers;
- Exercise a specialized professional activity in creative, production and content management organisations targeting their products for diverse fields, mass media, education, leisure, marketing, videogames and corporate broadcasting;
- Apply knowledge, solve problems in new or unfamiliar environments and multidisciplinary contexts, to develop studies of analysis and synthesis to develop research projects in scientific areas relevant stakeholders.

Access conditions

To be admitted to a doctoral programme of studies, the candidate should satisfy the conditions set forth in Portuguese legislation and in the normative conditions of UNL as well as fulfil at least one of the following requirements: a) Have a Masters degree, or a legal equivalent; b) Have a first cycle degree (‘licenciatura’) and a particularly relevant academic or scientific curriculum which is recognised by the Academic Board of FCSH as testifying to the candidate’s ability to undertake this cycle of studies; c) Posses an academic, scientific or professional curriculum which is recognised by the Academic Board of FCSH as testifying to the candidate’s ability to undertake this cycle of studies.

Degree pre-requisites

Typical duration of the program is 4 years full time (240ECTS), including 1 year of courses and the three following years of research. The course is organized in the following specializations: (1) audiovisual and interactive content creation, (2) Technology, (3) Industry, public and Markets.

Access to other courses

A Doctorate is a final qualification.
