Description

Founded in 1977, the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (NOVA/FCSH) (NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities) is an interdisciplinary unit with teaching and research objectives, characterized by the diversity and creativity of knowledge.
Located near Lisbon city center, it hosts a total of 4 753 students, 2 568 in undergraduate programmes, 1 544 in masters and 625 in PhD programmes. It has 273 professors, almost all holding a PhD degree.
NOVA/FCSH offers 14 undergraduate programmes (one of them in after-work schedule), during which students can benefit from mobility initiatives (e.g.: Erasmus+), annually involving more than 400 students.
In graduate training, FCSH/NOVA offers 12 postgraduate programmes, 44 master degrees and 26 PhD degrees.
NOVA/FCSH is nowadays the largest and most diverse Portuguese institution carrying out research in the Social Sciences and Humanities.
The excellence of research in Social Sciences and Humanities, one of the missions of NOVA/FCSH, is assured by 16 Research Units (UI - Unidades de Investigação) and branches of interuniversity centres.
Currently, the growing academic community at NOVA/FCSH has about 800 researchers who are integrated and/or associated in a Research Unit, as well as about 1 500 other co-researchers, students and research grantholders.

Pedro Hispano Programme - Doctoral Studies

The Pedro Hispano Programme – Doctoral Studies in Social Sciences and Humanities – aims to foster academic excellence, interdisciplinarity and internationalisation of all PhD programmes at NOVA/FCSH, through a set of joint initiatives:

- The Lisbon Winter School in Research Skills, focused on the development of methodological and transferable skills;
- Pedro Hispano Graduate Conference, in which PhD students get together in Lisbon to present and discuss their research results. Panels are organised around key themes;
- A Mobility and Doctor Europaeus Initiative, to promote the international exchange of students and scholars and the award of the European University Association´s Doctor Europaeus distinction, through our network of partner institutions.
