Objectives

To identify and understand the main city transformations, the social dynamics,the actors and life experiences from mid-18th century to the end of the 20th century,namely: a)transformations and issues related to morphology, architecture,treatment of public space,eighteenth-century Metropolitanisation,the problems and utopias associated to industrialisation and to the sanitary ideal,the urban project of the Modern Movement and its criticism. b)Change of urban space images and representations and their influence in urban policy and in the urban tissue transformation. c)To discern and understand the presented case studies. d)To know the social groups and interactions. e)To identify and debate the dilemmas concerning city security and order maintenance. f)To comprehend and analyse the «social question» and the variety of responses it generated. g)To apply acquired knowledge and develop critical competences by discussing sources, theoretical texts and by producing a short essay.

Prerequisites

Subject matter

I. Urban space transformations (From the 18th to the 20th century). 1) The city and its representations in the context of the Enlightenment . The reconstruction of Lisbon: Urban morphology, architecture and treatment of public spaces. 2) The eighteenth-century Metropolisation process. 3) Representations of the industrial and sanitary city in face of the metropolitan ideal. 4) The Modern Movement urban project: dissemination, criticism and drift. Urban morphology, architecture and treatment of public spaces. 5) From the revival of historical forms to the spectacle city. II. Urban actors and ways of life (From the 18th to the 20th century). 1) Industrialisation and urbanisation 2) Urban popular classes 3) Interactions and conflicts in the urban spaces 4) Security dilemmas: norm and order in public urban space 5) The «social question» in the city 6) Urban identities and sociabilities.

Teaching method

This curricular unit´s objectives are achieved through a set of theoretical classes (60%), followed by practical classes (40%) that enable the debate and deepening of the matters referred to in the theoretical classes.

Evaluation method

Final evaluation will include the preparation and participation in debates held in class (40%) and the elaboration of an individual final work (60%).
