Understand the socio-economic importance of geological resources in today''''''''s society. Identify privileged regions and understand its consequences on global geopolitics. Understand geologic processes and genetic mechanisms of mineral deposits, different metallogenesis models and its zonalities and controls of mineralization. Identify geological mechanisms related with different energy resources, the major producers and consumers and its future potentialities. Learn techniques and methodologies used on mineral exploration and the geological and economic parameters that characterize a mineral deposit. Know geological resources of strategic importance to recent technologies and their world distribution. Identify the potential resources to explore in a region; plan and develop mineral exploration projects and analyse its results; participate in mining feasibility studies and perform different functions (technical or administrative) in a mining project during its different stages.

Renewable and nonrenewable resources. Mineral and energy resources. resources, reserves, reserve base and resource base. Abundant and scarce metals. Distribution global resources. Minerals and society today. Geopolitics, use and control of world resources geological. Resources and reserves available for future generations. CRM – “Critical Raw Materials” problematic in an EU and global perspective. The importance future economic geology. Generating processes of mineral deposits. Mineralizing fluids, migration and deposition of minerals. Alteration-mineralization. Paragenetic sequence and zoning. Classification of mineral deposits and presenting world examples and Portuguese. Geotectonic framework of mineral deposits. The Hercynian Cycle and mineralization. Metallogenetic Provinces. Mineralizing processes in the active phase. Radioactive ores. Geothermal energy. Strategic Resources for the Future. Methods of geological exploration. Important parameters of mining feasibility studies: dilution, cut-off grade, "Net Smelter Return". The life cycle of a mine.

Teaching method

The teaching model adopted is kind of theoretical and practical: i) theoretical lectures and practical multimedia support; practice on macroscopic observation and study of samples related with different mineral deposits; presentation and resolution of problems with practical lessons on prospecting methods and related with geological parameters important for mining feasibility studies, iii) field visits to abandoned mining areas.

Evaluation method

Two written tests with a result of at least 9,5. Final medium of two tests equal ou major of 10 scores (score: from 0 to 20 values). Presentation of a work at the final of the program (25% of total final result). The tests or the final exame have a value of 75%.
