Objectives

a) To critically adress policies and strategies associated to the main development theories by the end of the XX century;
b) To understand the problems related to the planning of development, cooperation and international aid;
c) To know how to evaluate the different agents (international agencies, states, private sector and social economy) in the processes of development;
d) To understand the ethic principles followed by professionals in developped countries involved in the cooperation for development;
e) To have capacity to participate in territorial development projects in other countries of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP);
f) To use participative methods in field work in the framework of development projects;
g) To develop a research project about a selected topic of the Geography of Development.

Subject matter

1) The policies of development and the main economic, social, political, cultural and environmental problems of the developing countries
2) The international development:concepts and types of aid; the agents of international development
3) The European Union and the cooperation for the development
4) The reformulation of the role played by the State for the development: the reform of the institutions: is \"a smaller, but stronger State \"the solution?
5) Alternative modes of development at the local level: empowerment of the populations, women in development; design and application of methods and participative actions
6) The solutions for the development problems - mechanisms, instruments and exogenous ressources versus endogenous resources: synergies and conflicts
7) Success and insuccess cases in programs and development projects
8) Portugal and the participation of geographers for the development of other countries of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).

Evaluation method

• Reading of texts whose contents will be evaluated in a written test [30%];
• Elaboration of an individual essay [20%];
• Group participation in a practical work [40%], with oral presentation [10%].
