Objectives

a) To know the peculiar characteristics of water and its importance for life;
b) To understand the functioning of the water cycle and its role in the water and heat distribution;
c) To characterize the extreme hydrological events and its implications in regional planning;
d) To identify the problems related with water resources in the different analysis scales;
e) To analyze the problem of water resources management, in particular its economic environmental, legal and social implications;
f) To evaluate the consequences of the climatic change for water resources.

Prerequisites

None.

Subject matter

1) The characteristics of the water and its importance for life in Earth.
2) The water as constraint factor to the development of ecosystems.
3) The hydrological extremes, its causes, consequences and possible mitigation.
4) The problem of water resources at a Global, European, Mediterranean and Iberian Peninsula scale.
5) The current situation of water resources planning in Portugal.
6) Impacts of the climatic change on water resources.
7) The future of water.

- Theoretical lessons with presentation of the syllabus of Water Resources and encouraging the interaction student-iteacher;
- Participative lessons, encouraging the interaction student-teacher and student-student with presentations by students on the seminar works
- Practical work
- Research work supervising.

Evaluation method

- Reading of a set of thematic texts, evaluated in a written test: [40%]
- Elaboration of a written essay or fieldtrip with written report: [15%]
- Elaboration and presentation of a written essay resulting from autonomous research and supported by diverse bibliography: [35%]
- Participation: [10%].
