Objectives

a) To deepen theoretical knowledge crossing between SIG and Social Sciences;
b) To know how to use Spatial Statistics in Geodemography;
c) To develop methodologies for spatial representations and analysis of locations;
d) To know how to develop GIS application projects in Social Sciences;
e) To understand the usefulness of GIS in spatial analysis for the Social Sciences.

Subject matter

1) Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Social Sciences (CS): i) concepts; ii) spatial dimension in CS; iii) GIS components and functionality for CS
2) Science and GIS Technology: i) database; ii) operations GIS for CS: thematic cartography, reclassification, overlay, distance analysis, connectivity, and neighborhood analysis
3) Applications: production of thematic maps and spatial analysis in GIS
4) Operations Official Statistics: i) surveys and Census of Population and Housing; ii) methodologies of development, implementation and geographical disaggregation levels; iii) census maps: spatial demarcation criteria; iv) importance of the census \"fine\" of population and housing for market research, geomarketing and spatial demographics
5) Spatial Demography: i) theoretical principles, geodemographics indices; ii) principles of Spatial Statistics; iii) spatial interpolation
6) Geodemographics Project.

Lectures, laboratory classes / computer, project presentations by students.

The teaching methodologies are focused on independent work of the student and practical (hands-on). This work is tutorial for the application of theory to practice GIS in Social Sciences. Each student should know to propose projects that use knowledge and skills accumulated over the course.
