Objectives

a)To know the main recent changes in trade and distribution;
b) To understand the logic in the real estate retailing and office markets;
c) To recognize the logics of retail location at urban scale;
d) To analyse the issues of trade and consumption from a development perspective;
e) To understand the importance of Urban Commercial Planning;
f) To know Commercial Urbanism practices in the European countries and in the USA;
g)To review the experiences of Urban Commercial Planning in Portugal;
h) To know different forms of intervention and management models in city centres;
i) To develop critical thinking about the relationship between new forms of commerce, organization of space and urban lifestyles;
j) To apply the acquired knowledge to practical situations, notably in technical reports on Commercial Urbanism and in studies of retail location.

Teaching method

Theoretical and practical classes: extensive explanation of program topics; analysis and discussion of textbooks´ chapters and papers. Case studies: interventions and critical analysis of the solutions. Study visit.

Evaluation method

1) Written test about a set of selected texts [35%].
2) Theoretical and practical work (about 20 pages.), with oral presentation [45%].
3) Short essay on a theme of the program [15%].
4) Presence in the classes and participation [5%].
