Faculdade de Ciências Médicas Expansion
The construction work of the Library and Laboratories buildings of the Faculdade de Ciências Médicas began, in September, in partial occupation of the area where it was previously installed the Bacteriological Institute Câmara Pestana (IBCP).
The work, which is planned to last 2 years, is a project of the studio ZT Arquitectos, Lda. to expand the Faculdade de Ciências Médicas for a adjacent nucleus of the one built in 1906 by the Escola Médica as an extension of the Real Escola de Cirurgia do Hospital de S. José.
According to the descriptive memory, “the project intends to create a centralized area dedicated to teaching and research of medicine creating conditions for extra school hours permanence thus pointing to a new school system with a new relation between the student and the faculty space.”

Programme

Located in the Pena district, the intervention area is bounded on the east by the Bacteriological Institute Street, west and south by the Câmara Pestana Street, and north by a number of buildings still partly owned by the former Convento de Santana that still exists in the area and remained as a children’s asylum.
This area was occupied by a set of five main buildings that formed the Bacteriological Institute Câmara Pestana projected in 1897 and built in 1900.
The current project intend to enhance the memory of the Institute, using existing buildings and introducing a new urban experience to a block which is now characterized as a degraded and marginalized group in relation to the city.
The programme includes buildings with features as diversed as a Library and Health Documentation Centre, two buildings with research laboratories and an underground parking. The university nucleus will also have a canteen to be built in the 2nd phase of the works.
