RIDES Malaria Network

The RIDES network (Network for Research and Health Development) organized a technical and scientific meeting on the subject of Malaria in the CPLP countries (Portuguese-speaking countries) in Lisbon on the 24th and 25th of November.

Launched in 2006 during the first Tropical Medicine meeting of the Portuguese-speaking countries, RIDES members come from institutions in Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor. In terms of financial support, the network has received funds from CPLP and from other sources (CMDT LA/IHMT UNL and institutions in Brazil and Angola).

The main goal of RIDES is the training of technical and scientific groups from the member countries, study and discussion of themes of common interest, more efficient information sharing and interchange of results.

During this meeting, the following subjects were discussed: the RIDESMAL portal (to be launched in the CPLP portal), training and structural support, diagnose and handling of malaria cases, drug vigilance, antivectorial struggle, epidemiology and information systems, resistance to insecticides, partnerships and development, as well as the work plan for 2010-2011.

The next meeting is scheduled to take place in March 2010 at the Brazilian Society  of Tropical Medicine Congress.
