Nova Choir returns with concerts to celebrate Spring. With an entirely a cappella program dedicated to sacred music, Portuguese and European polyphonists or to black spirituals, the concerts take place on May 31 at 9:00 p.m., at the Rectorate of NOVA University Lisbon Universidade Nova, and on June 2 at 5:30 p.m., in the Church of Grace, and will be directed by the master João Valeriano.

Created in 1988, by then students of the Faculties of Medical Sciences, of Sciences and Technology, of Social Sciences and Humanities and of Economics of NOVA, Nova Choir was constituted as a non-profit association in May 2008, to promote and promote music. Its diversified repertoire includes symphonic choral works from the baroque and classical repertoire, polyphony from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, as well as harmonized popular music by Portuguese and foreign authors.

Maestro João Valeriano, who has been conducting the choir since 1994, studied Canto at the National Conservatory of Lisbon, where he finished his higher degree in violet and graduated in Composition from the Superior School of Music of Lisbon. A work of his own, "Missa Pro Defunctis", was presented in 2002, at the first hearing, at the Gulbenkian Museum, by the Chamber Choir of Lisbon.

João Valeriano directed several amateur choirs, among them the Choir of the Portuguese Catholic University, and sang, between 1973 and 2013, at the Gulbenkian Choir, where he also worked as a rehearser. He holds a degree in Management from Instituto Superior de Gestão.
