Diogo Freitas do Amaral, a full professor of Law and an honorary doctorate recipient from NOVA University Lisbon, was the founder and first dean of the Law School. A politician of widely recognised merit, he served as a Member of Parliament, Minister of Foreign Affairs and of National Defence, Deputy Prime Minister, and Acting Prime Minister. Internationally, he was President of the EUCD – European Union of Christian Democrats (1981–83) and President of the 50th UN General Assembly (1995–96).
