The Orquestra Académica Metropolitana will perform at the Rectorate Auditorium of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa on Friday, 13 March, at 9:00 PM, presenting a program that spans several musical periods under the direction of Jean‑Marc Burfin and/or students from the ANSO Orchestral Conducting Course. The concert concludes with Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 104, London, the last symphony he composed during his stay in the English capital in 1795.
The work is renowned for the energy of its final movement, built around a melody that combines the memory of a traditional Croatian song with the characteristic calls of London’s street vendors, a gesture often interpreted as a tribute to the warm reception his music received from British audiences.
The program also includes the overture to Mozart’s opera The Abduction from the Seraglio, which captivated Vienna in 1782; Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, the intimate serenade dedicated to Cosima Liszt on her birthday; and Britten’s Simple Symphony, the 1934 piece that helped launch the young English composer’s career.
NOVA community may request invitations by email to relacoespublicas@metropolitana.pt until 6:00 PM on Tuesday, 10 March.
