14.º Prémio de Jornalismo Económico: Jornalistas da revista Exame são os grandes vencedores

Economic Journalism Award 2017

“O dinheiro é verde?” ("Is money green?") by journalists Margarida Vaqueiro Lopes and Paulo Zacarias Gomes, published in Exame magazine, is the big winner of the 14th edition of the Economic Journalism Prize, a partnership between NOVA University Lisbon and Banco Santander.

The article was the cover of the magazine's May 2019 edition and talks about companies focused on ecology and the need to look at the planet's resources as something finite. Besides the Grand Prize for Economic Journalism, the journalists are also the winners of the Sustainability and Business Innovation category and will share a monetary value of 10,000 euros among themselves.

In the Business Management category, journalists Alexandre Malhado, Ana Taborda, Bruno Faria Lopes, Carlos Rodrigues Lima, and Eduardo Dâmaso, from the magazine Sábado, were awarded for their work  “O Grande Assalto ao Banco do Estado” (“The Great Assault on the State's Bank”). Published in February 2019, the article reports the approval of a series of credits with Caixa Geral de Depósitos that have proved to be ruinous for the institution.

In the Financial Markets category, the distinction was given to journalist Sílvia Caneco, with the article “€3 000 000 000. BESA, a Anatomia de um Golpe” (“€ 3,000,000,000. BESA, Anatomy of a Coup”), published in February in the magazine Visão, on the bankruptcy of BES Angola.

Upon winning the respective categories, each of these works receives a monetary prize in the amount of 5,000 euros.

The award ceremony took place today by videoconference, with the participation of João Sàágua, Rector of NOVA University Lisbon, and Pedro Castro e Almeida, Executive President of Banco Santander Portugal.

The 14th edition of the Economic Journalism Award received 68 applications. The works were evaluated by a jury composed by Francisco Caramelo (Director of NOVA FCSH and Executive President of the jury), António Granado (NOVA FCSH), Cátia Batista (Nova SBE), Conceição Zagalo, Helena Garrido, Graça Franco and Paulo Pinho (NovaSBE).
