Rector of NOVA at the IV Universia International Rectors Meeting in Salamanca – May 21 and 22

The King of Spain, Don Felipe de Bourbon, and the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will preside the opening ceremony of this meeting to debate the University in the XXI century.

The Rector of NOVA, Professor João Sàágua, will be present in the  IV Universia International Rectors Meeting, taking place in Salamanca on May 21 and 22.

The meeting, which gathers more than 700 rectors, academic representatives and political and institutional figures from all over the world, will have the presence of the KIng of Spain, Don Felipe de Bourbon, and the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in the opening ceremony, They will be joined by several other figures, including OECD Secretary-General, Angel Gurría, and the President of Universia and Santander Bank, Ana Botín.

"University, Society and Future" will be the topic in discussion during this meeting, focusing on three themes: "Teach and learn in a digital world", "Reaearch in the University, a paradigm shift?" and "The contribution of university to social and territorial development". Among the speakers, there will be Pam Fredman, President of International University Association; María José Alonso, Full Professor at Universidad de Santiago de Compostela and member of the National Academy of Medicine in the US, and Leila Janah, founder and CEO of Samasource and LXMI, companies that aim at ending world's poverty.

The conclusions of the debate will be registered in the "Declaration of Salamanca", with the commitment of the participants in assuring that the University evolves through concrete actions, in accordance with the needs of the XXI century's society, This meeting also coincides with the VIII Centenary of the University of Salamanca.

Ana Botín and the President of the Government of Spain, Mariano Rajoy, will preside the closing ceremony.
