NOVA and Aga Khan Development Network collaborate in Africa

The visit led by the Rector of NOVA made it possible to understand AKDN's action in East Africa.

A delegation of NOVA University Lisbon led by the Rector, Prof. João Sàágua, including the Vice-Rectors José Fragata and Prof. João Amaro de Matos, and the Dean of NOVA National School of Public Health, Prof. Carla Nunes, was recently in Nairobi, Kenya, at a meeting with representatives of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) to create synergies in the areas of Public Health and Social Communication.

The three-day visit to Aga Khan University represented an opportunity for NOVA to explore on the ground new forms of collaboration that are innovative and that may have an impact on the region.

Prof. João Amaro de Matos, Vice-Rector for International Development, said that «the visit provided an idea of the AKDN's social impact, with emphasis on the secondary education in the region (Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania), and AKU in particular, with the role that medical technology and media can play in emerging countries». Regarding NOVA's role in this meeting, the Professor added that «NOVA had the opportunity to contribute by suggesting the inclusion of Mozambique and the Lúrio University, whose presence in the person of Rector Prof. Francisco Noa confirmed it as a privileged partner in this cooperation».
