José João Abrantes is the new President of the Constitutional Court

The former Pro-Rector of NOVA University Lisbon had been appointed Chief Judge in July 2020.

The Full Professor of NOVA School of Law José João Abrantes was elected, on April 26, President of the Constitutional Court.

The former Pro-Rector of NOVA University Lisbon, who had been appointed Justice in July 2020, now replaces João Caupers, also a Full Professor at NOVA School of Law, who had become President of the Constitutional Court in February 2021.

José João Abrantes holds a degree and a master's degree from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, a doctorate in law from the University of Bremen and an aggregation in Law (Private Law) from NOVA School of Law, where he has been a professor since 2000. He is a specialist in Labour Law, and a member of several associations and scientific networks, being the Portuguese national expert for the European Labour Law Network, a network of labour lawyers assisting the European Commission's Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities. For seven years he was Vice-President of APODIT - Portuguese Labour Law Association.

In addition to his academic career, and a vast body of work published both in Portugal and abroad, covering various branches of law, he has extensive national and international experience as a specialist and consultant in the area of labour law, particularly in matters of European and International Law, having provided consultancy and technical assistance to ministries (such as the Ministry of Labour) and other public institutions.
