NOVA highlights the contribution of João Salgueiro to Portuguese society

The renowned economist was a professor at Nova SBE and was distinguished with an Honorary Doctorate by NOVA in 2017.

It was with great sorrow and consternation that NOVA University Lisbon received the news of the death of the economist João Salgueiro.

"NOVA University Lisbon is grateful for the contribution of João Salgueiro to the Portuguese society, both for the exercise of the most relevant public functions and for his profound knowledge of the banking sector and the economic life of the country, as well as for the example of citizenship", underlines the Rector of NOVA, João Sàágua, who sends the most heartfelt condolences to family and friends.

João Salgueiro was a renowned economist and politician. Appointed vice-governor of the Bank of Portugal in 1974, he served as Minister of State and Finance between 1981 and 1983 and as administrator of CGD between 1996 and 1999. He was a member of the Economic and Social Council, Vice-Chairman of the Board of the European Banking Federation, Chairman of the General Board of Eurodefense-Portugal and Professor at the Nova School of Business and Economics. He was awarded the Grã-Cruz da Ordem de Cristo in 2010 and an Honorary Doctorate from NOVA University Lisbon in 2017.
